Charlie Sexton, raised in Austin, Texas, made his debut with Pictures For Pleasure in 1985 at age 16. Sexton quickly became known as a guitar prodigy and spent his late teens as an in demand session player. He recorded with names like Ron Wood, Keith Richards and Bob Dylan. By the age of 20, he released a self-titled album, becoming the second in his discography.
As the product of a teenage mom, Charlie was brought to Austin at the young age of four. By her side, Charlie grew up going to some of the most iconic clubs in Austin’s music history like the Armadillo World Headquarters and the Soap Creek Saloon. After living with his mother on Austin’s city limits, Sexton moved himself into town at the age of 12. His musical heroes, Joe Ely, Jimmie Vaugh, and Stevie Ray Vaugh, put him up until he could stand on his own. They took him in, and made places like the Split Rail and Antone’s blues club into classrooms.
From then on, Charlie made a name for himself in the industry. He opened for major names from David Bowie to Bob Dylan and that was just the beginning. He was a member of Austin's Arc Angels, alongside Doyle Bramhall II, Tommy Shannon and Chris "Whipper'' Layton. The group recorded and released one self-titled album on Geffen Records. By the time the Arc Angels disbanded, Sexton was 24 years old and already pinholed as a blues musician. However, Sexton went on to defy that label. He formed a new band, the Charlie Sexton Sextet. Together they recorded his debut album for MCA Records, Under The Wishing Tree. Sexton's album was well-received by the critics, showcasing his array of musical genres, touching on Celtic flavored rock, folk-rock through his gutsy, fluid blues, and spirited rock 'n' roll guitar.
As a songwriter, Sexton writes about what he knows. He came up around the greats, and it shows. His lyrics mix autobiographical experiences with images of Texas themes that permeate his songs. For this, Sexton credits Bob Dylan as his strongest songwriting influence, while his guitar playing lies with his grassroots Austin legends Jimmie Vaughan and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. Keeping true to his ways, Sexton continues to play with the greats. Recently, Charlie has toured, played and even recorded with the likes of Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, and Bob Dylan. The best is yet to come for artists like Charlie Sexton, time only serves to prove that he will remain one of the great names of not just rock and roll but Austin’s rich music history.
